Adolph OrcCheshire Regiment, 1914Nazi Officer, 1944
German NSDAP Officer, 1942Byzantine Woman |
A Fantasy 1/12 resin bust from Scale 75 sculpted by Dani Serrano. I first saw this figure in Atlanta at their 2020 show. I haven't painted many Fantasy figures but got the "itch" when I saw the many Fantasy figures on display. Like all my figures this was painted in oils over acrylics. I was a bit concerned when I went to blend the Crimson ears into the Green of the face but it seemed to blend nicely. This bust is of a WWI British Army soldier of the Cheshire Regiment Territorials, 6th Battalion. This unit took part in the Christmas Truce of 1914. The resin bust is by Stormtroopers Miniatures. All pieces had minimal cleanup and fit well. Painted in Winsor/Newton oils over an acrylic base. The cap is a mix of Gold/Ochre and Burnt/Umber. The coat is made up of Mostly Burnt/Umber with Burnt/Sienna. The entire piece was then Dullcoted using an airbrush. The wine bottle was painted green then glossed over with an acrylic. All in all it was a fun piece to do.
This is another of Verlinden's older kits from the late 80's or early 90's. It's a Nazi Officer from WWII. He's set in a German railway station possibly looking for political criminals. Painting was fairly simple being all Black. The most difficult parts were the armband and the Nazi Party stickpin in his tie. Somehow I was able to actually paint a swastika on the pin.
This is one of Verlinden's older kits from the late 80's or early 90's. All resin and kit well sculpted. I used Gold/Ochre mixed with a bit of Burnt/Umber for the coat. The groundwork is MagicSculpt two part putty. It's made to represent a sidewalk in Berlin. I finally decided to attempt to paint a flat. It's my first one as well. Ive seen "flats" for many years and have always wanted to try painting one. I was inspired to do so after my visit to Paris last year. It's painted in Winsor/Newton oils as are all my figures. It measures three inches in diameter and is made of metal. It's based on the Alphonse Mucha series called "Byzantine Women." The "Art Nouveau" period is one of my favorites and Much was a huge contributor to this style. The frame compliments the piece nicely too. |
The Marshal, 1870
This is a 75mm metal kit from Romeo Models sculpted by Gianni La Rocca. Pieces fit nicely and required minimal cleaning. The figure was primed with aerosol Krylon Grey Primer then underpinned in acrylics. Most of the color is Black so I used Winsor Newton Lamp Black throughout. I varied the shade slightly on the duster by adding some Raw Umber. The leather was done by using a variety of Burnt Sienna, Burnt Umber and Gold Ochre. Dullcote was applied afterward using an airbrush.
The base was made by using plastic strips and weathered to look like any one of the Old West side walks.

General Anthony McAuliffe, 101st Airborne, 1944
This 1/10 scale bust comes from United Empire Miniatures and is cast entirely in resin. Not too many pieces involved in this kit. Arms, head, helmet and sidearm as well as the base. All parts go together well and require minimal cleanup. Painting was done in oils over an acrylic base.
German Imperial Hussar, 4th Regt. 1910.
This 1/10 scale bust comes from Michael Miniatures and is painted in the colors of the 4th Regt. I used a mixture of Mars Brown and Crimson to get the correct color. Mike Cramer was gracious enough to send me photos of the original tunic so I could duplicate the color. The only modification is the cross belt. I tried to paint some texture but had no luck getting it to look like I wanted. I then decided to make my own belt and after several failed attempts came up with a solution. To see how it was done select German Imperial hussar tutorial this link for the tutorial and more photos.
The kit is sculpted Carl Reid who did a fantastic job. The Gold and Silver are painted with Printers inks using Liquin as a carrier.

Japanese Kamikaze, 1945
This is 1/9 scale bust by Andrea Miniatures. The kit is mainly resin with the exception of a few metal pieces such as the gloves, pistol and rear scarf sections. It went together rather well and didn't require any type of major work. The colors on this figure are pretty drab as are most WWII uniforms but the color of flight suit really made it "pop." I was concerned I might not be able to duplicate it's unique color. I used a basic mix of Mars Brown which I thought would get me to the "Reddish Brown" color of Japanese flight suits but it didn't quite look right. I have a tube of Venetian Red that I bought some time ago for another figure so I started adding small portions until I got it right. It was highlighted with a mix of Titanium White and Gold Ochre. Shadows were done with Burnt Umber then Lamp Black.
Adolph Hitler Berlin, 1945
This figure depicts Adolph Hitler in Berlin just before the end of WWII. Titled "The End" by Andrea it's part of the Third Reich series. A 90mm metal figure with only nine pieces. The sculpting is equally good as the other pieces in this series. A good fit with a minimal amount of cleaning needed. The figure was painted in acrylics before applying oils. His hat was painted with Lamp Black mixed with Titanium White. The band is painted with Alizarin Crimson which is a transparent color so I added some Titanium White for an opaque look. His coat is painted in a mix of Blue/Black mixed with Titanium White. The lighting in the photograph make it appear lighter than it actually is. The groundwork is the one provided by Andrea in the kit. I thought it worked well and decided to use it rather than make my own.
"Armored Death" (Abyssal Warlord)
This is a 1/10 scale resin bust by SK Miniatures originally called "Abyssal Warlord. There aren't many pieces to the kit but once assembled its rather large and heavy. The fur cape needed to have some filling in due to the gap between the two pieces. This is easily done with Magic Sculpt or another type of modeling putty. I did this piece as a commission and can honestly say I had a great time in the process Being a fantasy piece I was pretty much granted free reign when it came to color. To a figure painter this is quite a relief not having someone tell you your colors aren't accurate. The piece was sprayed flat black as an undercoat then the armor was painted in a mix of Black acrylic mixed with some Gunmetal acrylic. I found some powder pigment in Atlanta that I used for the rush effect. These can be used with various types of carriers. I used water and rubbing alcohol then sealed it with Dull Coat. The base is made of 1/4 inch steel that I weather outdoors for a few days then sealed wit a clear acrylic.

Paul Ludwig Hans Anton von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, 1914
Paul Von Hindenburg by Alexandros Models. 75mm white metal. The kit went together very well considering the way it was cast. I had to do some thinking before assembly in order to be able to paint some of the pieces.
Painted in oils over acrylics as usual. One of the most challenging parts was trying to figure out how to accurately paint the medal group. Hindenburg wore a variation of medal groups so there was some wiggle room so to speak. He is shown here in November of 1914 when he was given the position of Supreme Commander East (Ober Ost).

Chinese Boxer, 1900
Chines Boxer by Alexandros Models. 75mm White metal. Painted in oils over acrylics. This figure was not from a period I was really interested in but the pose just struck me as unique. I had some help from a friend of mine to suggest some very interesting ideas for a base. Together we arrived at this. The resin parts used for the base are by Bayardi. The post is mounted to the base with a 1/8 brass rod and the figure is mounted to the post with a smaller diameter rod. All very solid. The arms were cast separate from the body and fit well once cleaned. I had to leave the left arm off while painting the torso because it would have been in the way.
The Blue of his uniform was a mix of Indigo Blue and Titanium White. Flesh is my basic mix of Burnt Sienna, Gold Ochre mixed with Titanium White.

Officer of Tercios - Ricori, 1643
This is a 70mm metal kit by Romeo Models. The pieces went together nicely with minimal cleanup. I did the armor with a worn, dirty appearance rather than shiny and clean. This was done by covering the metal surface with Burnt Umber oils then wiping it clean just leaving some paint in the recesses. I then sprayed the surface with Dullcote the seal everything in. This also added to the "worn" look I was after. The breeches are painted with Gold/Ochre and Burnt Umber.
Duke of Vendome
War of Spanish Succession, 1705
This is a 70mm white metal figure from Toison Studio's. I have to say this one was a real challenge to paint. Careful thought an planning were needed before starting. Most of the figure was painted without the right arm attached. This was because there was lot's of detail I wouldn't be able to paint with the sword blade being in the way and possibly being damaged. The breastplate was polished and sealed prior to everything else. Otherwise it would have been impossible to do without damaging the surrounding areas. All colors are oils over acrylics. The entire figure was sprayed with Dullcote through an airbrush when complete.
Claus von Stauffenberg - July, 1944
Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (15 November 1907 – 21 July 1944), was a German army officer and aristocrat who was one of the leading members of the failed 20 July plot of 1944 to assassinate Adolf Hitler and remove the Nazi Party from power.
This is a 90mm resin figure by S-T Miniatures. The kit goes together well with minimal cleanup and crisp detail. The face appears to have been modeled after Tom Cruise who played Stauffenberg in the movie Valkyrie.
Oils over acrylic base as per my usual technique. Entire figure was sprayed with Dulcote when complete. I used Future floor wax diluted with water to build up the proper sheen on the leather overcoat.

Hermann Wilhelm Göring 1942
Göring was a German politician, military leader, and leading member of the Nazi Party (NSDAP). A veteran of World War I as an ace fighter pilot, he was a recipient of the coveted Pour le Mérite, also known as the "Blue Max". He was the last commander of Jagdgeschwader 1, the fighter wing once led by Manfred von Richthofen, the "Red Baron".

Completed just in time for the Chicago Show. Another great figure from Andrea. The fit of the pieces were excellent. Minimal amount of cleanup needed. The face is so well sculpted it basically paints itself. The main color of the uniform was a mix of Winsor Blue, Titanium White and a touch of Blue/Black over a Light Blue acrylic base. Highlighted with Titanium White. Shadows are painted in Lamp Black. The leather is a mix of Burnt Umber & Burnt Sienna highlighted with Gold Ochre and White. Gloss on the leather is Future Floor Wax diluted with water to build up the desired sheen. Metals are printers inks applied with Winsor Newton Liquin or the clear carrier from testors enamels.

Joseph Brant Thayendanegea
Mohawk War Chief
This is a new release by United Empire Miniatures. Distributed by Michael Miniatures. It's a 1/10 scale resin bust sculpted by Carl Reid. The casting is very crisp and cleans up easily. He is painted entirely in oils over an acrylic base. I intentionally gave him a caucasian complexion due to the fact that the eastern tribes were somewhat lighter skin than the wester plains Indians. All the painting I've seen of him indicated the same.
Queen of the Forest
Union Infantry Drummer Boy, Winter 1863
This is a 54mm resin figure of a Union Infantry Drummer Boy. He's dressed in the sky blue winter uniform of 1863-64.
Painted in artists oils over acrylics. The Blue is a mix of Blue/Black, Winsor Blue and Titanium White. The drum is a combination of oils and acrylics.
This figure will be donated to the 1013 MMSI auction in October.

Adolph Hitler
Berlin, 1934
This is a 90mm metal figure of Adolph Hitler prior to WWII. He's wearing the uniform of the Sturmabteilung (SA). The time is 1934 and could be in Berlin when he gave his "night of the long knives" speech.
The casting is just fantastic. Parts fit well and require minimum cleanup. This is the second in the line (Third Reich) from Andrea I painted. Uniform color was a mix of Gold/Ochre, Burnt Sienna and White. Burnt Umber was used for the shadows and White for the highlights. All done over an acrylic base. The microphone and stand were painted in a Bronze and silver color rather than all silver. I thought this added some interest to the overall presentation.
